Reject Marine Le Pen's Proposed Hijab Ban In France

Marine Le Pen and France’s National Rally (RN) have declared that they will ban the hijab in public spaces and fine women who continue to wear it if Le Pen wins the 2027 presidential election. The proposal to ban the hijab echoes a troubling chapter of France’s colonial history, when Muslim women in Algeria were targeted through state-backed unveiling campaigns presented as “liberation.” France should be confronting that legacy of controlling Muslim women’s dress, not reviving the same patterns of colonial oppression against Muslim citizens today. Tell European and French parliamentarians to reject this discriminatory proposal before 2027, defend freedom of religion and equal citizenship, and uphold Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité for Muslim women too.
