On October 20, 2026, Mount Royal University hosted 'Voices for Peace in the Middle East' in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre — a Calgary stop on the 'United We Stand' tour run by Allied Voices for Israel and Sharaka, two organizations that promote Israel and normalization with the Israeli state. The event appeared on the official MRU events calendar with the Chair of the Department of Humanities as the university contact, and its posters were displayed across campus.
Organizers' 'peace and coexistence' framing presents a one-sided political position as a neutral academic conversation, whitewashing Israel's occupation, military violence and denial of Palestinian rights — a reality UN investigators documented again this month, reporting that Israel continues to commit genocide in Gaza and crimes against humanity in the occupied West Bank.
The event has taken place, but the university still owes answers. We call on MRU to:
1. Publicly explain who approved the event and its campus-wide promotion.
2. Disclose any university funds, facilities or staff time used.
3. Publish transparent criteria before any third-party advocacy organization can use campus platforms.
4. Meet with Palestinian and Arab students and act on anti-Palestinian racism on campus.
Freedom of expression does not mean freedom from criticism or institutional accountability.
