Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, has been held without charge in Israeli detention since December 27, 2024. Held in solitary confinement under Israel's Unlawful Combatants Law, Dr. Safiya is reportedly suffering from severe respiratory distress and is in life-threatening danger. As a civilian healthcare worker who remained at his post to care for malnourished children during the Gaza conflict, his detention violates international humanitarian law. Canada must use its diplomatic power to demand his immediate release and uphold the Geneva Convention's protections for medical personnel.
